AS9102

AS9102 is the aerospace standard that defines the requirements and standard forms for first article inspection, used across the aviation, space, and defense supply chain.

AS9102 is published by SAE and maintained by the aerospace quality community alongside AS9100. It standardizes how a first article inspection is performed and documented, so a prime contractor gets the same three forms from every supplier.

Form 1 covers part number accountability: the part, its revision, and any subassemblies. Form 2 covers product accountability: raw material, special processes such as heat treat or plating, and functional testing, usually with the supplier certs that back them up. Form 3 covers characteristic accountability: every ballooned characteristic on the drawing with its requirement and the measured result.

The standard also describes when a full or partial FAI is needed again, such as after a design change, a change in manufacturing process, location, or tooling, or a lapse in production. Always check your customer's purchase order and quality requirements, which can add to the standard.

Traveler is designed to generate AS9102 Forms 1 through 3 from data the shop already holds, as part of the compliance suite included in every plan.
