AS9100
AS9100 is the quality management system standard for aviation, space, and defense organizations, built on ISO 9001 with additional industry-specific requirements.
AS9100 includes the full text of ISO 9001 and adds requirements the aerospace industry cares about: configuration management, product safety, counterfeit parts prevention, first article inspection, special requirements and critical items, control of external providers, and on-time delivery and quality performance monitoring. Many aerospace primes require it of their suppliers, and certified suppliers are listed in the industry's OASIS database.
Certification comes from an accredited certification body (registrar) after an audit, followed by surveillance audits during the certificate's three-year cycle and a recertification audit at the end. For a small shop, the costs are the audits themselves, the time to build and maintain the quality system, and the records the system demands every day.
Software doesn't certify a shop, but it decides how painful the records are. Traveler's compliance suite, included in the price, is designed to make the records a byproduct of the work: traceability from job to material cert, FAI forms, NCR and corrective action, gage calibration, and a per-job audit binder.
