Paying for a Shop Server: Section 179, Grants and Payment Options

A Shop Server is a one-time purchase: $4,250 for Shop Server or $6,500 for Shop Server Defense. Because it's equipment plus off-the-shelf software, it may qualify for first-year expensing, and in a few states it may qualify for a technology grant. Here's what we found, what to confirm before you buy, and how to pay. None of this is tax or legal advice.

Section 179 and 100% bonus depreciation

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (P.L. 119-21, July 2025) made 100% bonus depreciation permanent for property acquired after January 19, 2025, and set the Section 179 limit at $2.5 million, phasing out at $4 million. Adjusted for inflation, the 2026 figures are reported at about $2.56 million and $4.09 million.

A Shop Server may qualify on both counts. The box is tangible business equipment, and off-the-shelf software (publicly available, non-exclusively licensed, not substantially modified) is generally eligible for Section 179 and for bonus depreciation per IRS Publication 946. That means a $4,250 or $6,500 purchase may be deductible in full in the year you place it in service. It may qualify; confirm with your tax advisor.

The honest comparison: a subscription like Traveler Cloud is deductible too, as an ordinary monthly expense. The difference is timing. Expensing a Shop Server may let you deduct several years of software cost this year instead of spreading it out. The optional continuity plan (from $59/mo) is an ordinary expense either way.

State programs that can cover hardware and software

We found no federal program that pays a small manufacturer to buy software; federal help goes to assessments and technical assistance. A few state programs do reimburse hardware or software purchases. They're sporadic, funding windows open and close, and most require approval before you buy.

Before you order: programs change, so confirm eligibility and get pre-approval before buying. Buying first can disqualify the purchase.

Michigan Industry 4.0 Technology Implementation Grant (MEDC)

50% reimbursement, up to $25,000, for SBA-small manufacturers. Hardware and software, including cybersecurity, are explicitly eligible.

Requires an MMTC assessment or a documented technology strategy first. Funded on a rolling basis while money lasts; it has been reported closed at times.

Indiana Manufacturing Readiness Grants (IEDC / Conexus)

At least a 1:1 match, up to $200,000 (lifetime cap around $250,000), for Industry 4.0 technology and data analytics.

Funded by fiscal-year cycle; the 2026 application window was not confirmed when we checked.

Iowa Manufacturing 4.0 Technology Investment

Reimbursement grant for Industry 4.0 technology.

The 2026 round was reported to open January 5, 2026.

Connecticut CAP (CCAT)

50% match up to $35,000 ($10,000 assessment / $25,000 remediation), $5,000 minimum project; apply before contracting.

Remediation runs through an approved consultant. Hardware and software are not explicitly listed, so eligibility for a Shop Server is unclear. Ask before you apply.

Elsewhere, most state cyber programs (for example Virginia's and Illinois's) fund assessments, not purchases. Maryland's cybersecurity tax credit only applies to purchases from qualified Maryland sellers, which Traveler is not.

Your MEP center can help you apply

Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) centers work with small manufacturers on exactly this and can help you find and apply to your state's programs. In Michigan, for example, the Industry 4.0 grant expects an MMTC assessment first. Call your MEP center before you order, tell them what you're planning, and ask what fits.

Using our printable quote for grants and POs

Grant applications and purchasing departments both want a written quote. The printable quote shows the build, any Floor Kiosk units, the price and what's included, and it's honored for 30 days. Attach it with the spec sheet and, for cybersecurity programs, the security and responsibility matrix.

If your application takes longer than 30 days, we'll reissue the quote.

Payment options

Ordering opens soon. Until then, holding your place is free, and these are the payment options that will be available.

Refundable deposit
Put down $250 to hold a unit in a build batch. It's refundable in full any time before shipping and applied to the price. The balance is due before the box ships.
Pay in full
Pay the whole amount up front by card or ACH, with no deposit step.
Invoice / purchase order
Send a PO and we invoice you. Use the printable quote (valid 30 days) to get the PO issued.
ACH bank transfer
Pay the deposit, balance or invoice by ACH. No card fees, and it's what most shops' bookkeepers prefer.

Full details are in the terms of sale.

Funding questions

▸Can I write off a Shop Server in the first year?

It may qualify. The box is equipment, and off-the-shelf software is generally eligible for Section 179 and bonus depreciation, so a Shop Server may be fully deductible in the year you place it in service. Your situation decides it; confirm with your tax advisor.

▸Is a Shop Server a better tax deal than a subscription?

Mostly it's a timing difference. Subscriptions are deductible business expenses too, spread over the years you pay them. Expensing a Shop Server may let you take several years of software cost as a deduction up front. The optional continuity plan is an ordinary monthly expense.

▸Is there a federal grant for shop software?

Not that we found. Federal programs for small manufacturers fund assessments and technical help, not software or hardware purchases. A few state programs do cover hardware and software; programs change, so confirm eligibility and get pre-approval before buying.

▸Can I use your quote for a grant application or PO?

Yes. The printable quote shows the build, price and what's included, and it's honored for 30 days. Most grant programs and purchasing departments ask for exactly that.
