JobBOSS Alternatives for Small Machine Shops (2026)
JobBOSS² is one of the most widely installed job-shop systems in the US, owned by ECI Software Solutions, which is itself private-equity backed. It's also the system E2 Shop System customers are being steered toward as E2 is consolidated. 'JobBOSS' draws about 1,600 searches a month, and competitors bid on the name — a sign of how many shops are evaluating whether to stay.
This guide sticks to published pricing and what users report in reviews and forums. JobBOSS² works for many shops; the question is whether its cost and workflow fit a shop of 2–20 people, and what the realistic alternatives cost.
What JobBOSS² costs and who it fits
Reported pricing is roughly $85–150 per user per month, from around $3,000/year at the low end, with implementation commonly ranging from $20,000 to $100,000-plus depending on size and scope. It's a full-featured system with a large installed base and an ecosystem: uniPoint, a widely used QMS, announced an integration in 2024.
That model fits shops of 20 people and up with an office staff to run it. Below that, per-user pricing and implementation fees take a large bite out of the budget, which is why many small shops evaluating it end up comparing alternatives.
Why shops look for alternatives
The reasons users cite in reviews and forums cluster into a few themes. Interface: a click-heavy, nested UI that one user likened to Russian dolls. Support: reports in 2024 of waiting days for a response. Scheduling: reviewers in late 2024 noted the lack of drag-and-drop scheduling, and users report scheduling locked to a single user at a time. Inventory: a stocked-inventory model that doesn't match job shops buying material per job.
Ownership is the other theme. Long-time users of ECI products describe reduced development investment after acquisitions, and the E2 consolidation means shops on either product face a migration decision anyway. None of these are universal — plenty of shops run JobBOSS² happily — but they're the reasons the search exists.
The alternatives, by tier
Mid-market cloud: ProShop ERP, about $175/user/month with entry around $500–715/month and implementation of $10,000–50,000, strong on AS9100 and ITAR compliance for regulated CNC shops. Fulcrum, with Base around $6,000/year plus $5,000 implementation and Core around $12,000/year, unlimited users. Cetec ERP publishes $50/user/month with a 5-user minimum ($250/month). Global Shop Solutions has a 10-user minimum and unpublished pricing.
Small-shop tier: StartProto from about $99/month; ezshopflow, a machinist-built tool sold as a $3,750 one-time lifetime license running on your LAN; and Traveler, which is pre-launch and planned at $109/month flat with unlimited users, or a $4,250 one-time Shop Server for shops that want to own the hardware ($6,500 for the Shop Server Defense edition built for CUI work). Some shops skip shop software entirely and stay on QuickBooks, spreadsheets, and a whiteboard — still the most common setup under 10 people.
How to evaluate and migrate
Ask every vendor the same five questions: per-shop or per-seat pricing; implementation fee and who does the migration; can floor workers clock a job with zero typing; can you export everything in a documented format any time; and can you see quoted versus actual on a live job. Get the answers in writing before a demo.
For migration, customer, part, and open-order lists are usually the straightforward part; job history and attachments are the hard part. Plan to bring over open work and active parts, archive the rest as an export you can search, and run both systems for a short overlap rather than cutting over mid-month. Traveler plans JobBOSS² and E2 CSV importers plus free white-glove migration for shops moving over.
