JobBOSS² Alternative for Small Machine Shops: Traveler vs JobBOSS²

JobBOSS² has the largest install base in job-shop software. It's owned by ECI Software Solutions (backed by private equity firms Leonard Green and Apax), and it's the destination ECI is steering E2 Shop System customers toward — so for a lot of shops, it's the default choice whether or not they chose it.

Reported pricing runs roughly $85–150 per user per month, starting around $3,000/year, with implementation reported anywhere from $20,000 to over $100,000. Traveler is a different shape for smaller shops: $109/month flat for unlimited users, no implementation fee, built around the quote-to-invoice loop. Traveler is in early access; JobBOSS² has the biggest installed base in the segment behind it.

Why shops look for a JobBOSS² alternative

The complaints in 2024–2026 forum and review posts are consistent. The interface is described as click-heavy — one user called it 'like Russian dolls.' Support response is a recurring theme ('won't hear back for days,' 2024). And long-time ECI customers report reduced development investment since the acquisitions. None of that means the software doesn't work; it means owners feel the cost of every click and every unanswered ticket.

Traveler's answer is a design rule, not a promise: every workflow is costed in keystrokes against the spreadsheet it replaces, and if Traveler loses, the workflow gets redesigned. Blanks are allowed — incomplete records are flagged, never blocked — and everything autosaves, because users report losing material lines on reopen in their current system.

Material: per-job, not stocked inventory

One of the most-cited structural complaints about JobBOSS² is the inventory model. Job shops mostly buy material per job — this bar of 6061 for that PO — while the software assumes stocked inventory first, so every purchase becomes a workaround.

Traveler is built the other way around. Released jobs create material demand, demand groups into one PO per supplier, and receiving captures the mill test report photo and heat number in about 90 seconds. The heat lot prints on the traveler, and job → lot → cert → supplier PO is a two-click trace. Stocked items are optional for hardware and consumables.

Scheduling without the lockout

Scheduling is one of the most-hated modules across legacy ERPs, and a documented reason shops switch. JobBOSS² users reported no drag-and-drop scheduling in late 2024, and scheduling that only one user can edit at a time.

Traveler's scheduling is deliberately modest: at launch, a 'what's late, what's next' list derived from promise dates and op status — the whiteboard replacement. A drag-and-drop board with a full-screen TV mode, multi-user editing, and an expedite panel that shows which promise dates break before you commit is planned next. No finite-capacity optimizer — on purpose.

Cost math and moving your data

At the reported $85–150/user/month, an 8-seat shop pays roughly $680–1,200/month in licenses before implementation. If you add uniPoint for quality at ~$150/user/month, it stacks further. Traveler is $109/month for the whole shop, quality suite included.

Leaving any system is mostly a data problem. Customers, parts, and open orders export cleanly; job history is the hard part. Traveler plans dedicated JobBOSS² and E2 CSV importers plus free white-glove migration for shops coming from ECI systems — and one-click full export on the way out, so you're never in this position again.

When JobBOSS² is the better pick

Stay on or pick JobBOSS² if you're a larger shop that values the biggest installed base in the category, you're coming from E2 and want the least-change path within the same vendor, or you need the uniPoint QMS integration today. If your team already knows it and it runs your floor, the cost of switching may outweigh the license savings — be honest about that before you move.

Straight answers

▸How much does JobBOSS² cost?

Pricing isn't fully published. Reported figures: about $85–150 per user per month, starting around $3,000/year, with implementation from roughly $20,000 to over $100,000 depending on scope. Ask for a written quote including implementation and training.

▸Can I import my JobBOSS² data into Traveler?

That's the plan: JobBOSS² and E2 CSV importers plus free white-glove migration for shops leaving ECI systems. Customers, parts, and open orders move cleanly; tell us early what job history you need carried over.

▸Does Traveler replace QuickBooks like an ERP would?

No. Traveler never does accounting. It pushes invoices and customers to QuickBooks one way, with a visible pushed/failed status per record. Your accountant keeps the books where they are.

▸Is Traveler cheaper than JobBOSS² for a 5-person shop?

At reported pricing, yes: five seats at $85–150/user/month is $425–750/month before implementation. Traveler is $109/month flat with unlimited users and no implementation fee.
