Material certs / mill test report (MTR)
A mill test report, often called a material cert, is the document from the mill or supplier certifying a material's heat or lot, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and the specification it meets.
Every bar, plate, or tube from a reputable supplier traces to a heat or lot number, and the MTR for that heat shows its chemistry, mechanical test results, and the specifications it was certified to. For regulated work, the cert is how a shop proves the material in a part is what the drawing called for, and the heat number is the thread that ties a finished part back to its material.
The failure mode in small shops is timing. Material arrives, gets cut, and the cert sits in a pile until someone files it, sometimes after the parts have already shipped. Then an auditor or customer asks for trace and someone spends an afternoon reconstructing it.
Traveler's receiving flow is designed to be faster than the shop: confirm the PO line, photograph the MTR, key the heat number, print lot labels. The heat lot then prints on the traveler, the cert joins the job's document package, and trace runs job to lot to cert to supplier PO in two clicks.
