Shop Software That Works Without Internet: For Rural Shops and Owners Who Won't Rent
Some shops sit at the end of a slow line with one provider and an outage every few weeks. Others have fine internet and an owner who's simply done renting software. Both end up in the same place: cloud systems priced per seat, per month, forever, that stop working when the connection does.
Traveler's Shop Server is the whole system on a silent fanless box that sits on your network and works with the internet unplugged. It's $4,250 one time with unlimited users and 12 months of updates, and the box keeps working forever if you never pay us another dollar. Shop Server Defense ($6,500) adds mirrored SSDs and a small UPS for shops that also handle defense work. Both are planned to ship after Traveler Cloud. You can reserve one at /shop-server.
“When our internet goes down, a cloud system takes the whole shop down with it.”
The Shop Server runs on your local network. Floor tablets and office computers connect to the box directly, so quoting, travelers, and floor scans keep working when the outside line is dead.
“Every renewal, the price goes up.”
That's not just a feeling: SaaS prices rose 12.3% year over year (Vertice, September 2025), and 79% of IT leaders reported renewal increases (Zylo, 2026). The Shop Server is a one-time purchase. The $59 a month continuity plan is optional, and the box doesn't stop if you cancel it.
“Even 'lifetime' deals get changed after you buy.”
We've watched it happen too. Plex's lifetime pass went from $119.99 to $249.99 in April 2025, then to $749.99 in July 2026. Traveler's commitment is about the box you already own: it keeps running the software on it whether or not you ever pay for anything else.
“I don't have an IT person to babysit a server.”
The box arrives preloaded. Plug in power and ethernet, scan a QR code with your phone, and create the owner account on a local page. There's no Windows server or database license to manage.
Two kinds of offline
If your internet just blips now and then, Traveler Cloud may be enough. Its floor surfaces are designed to queue scans locally, show how many are waiting, and sync when the line comes back, and travelers print without a connection. That costs $109 a month with no hardware to look after.
If outages last hours, or you'd rather your shop never depend on an outside connection, the Shop Server is the better fit. Everything runs on the box in your building, and the internet becomes optional instead of required.
What works with the internet unplugged, and what doesn't
Quoting, travelers, floor tracking, scheduling, material traceability, shipping paperwork, and the compliance suite all run on the box over your local network. In LAN-only mode it makes no outside connection beyond a documented license check-in.
A few things need the outside world. QuickBooks Online sync needs an outbound connection, so in strict LAN-only mode you'd handle that handoff another way. Nightly encrypted offsite backup, signed remote updates, and reaching the box from the mobile app outside the shop come with the optional continuity plan. Without the plan, back up to a local drive. Shop Server Defense includes an encrypted USB backup drive for that.
The five-year math
Traveler Cloud is $109 a month, which is $6,540 over five years, or $5,450 on annual billing. The Shop Server is $4,250 up front, plus the $59 a month continuity plan only if you want it. Either way it's unlimited users, so the math doesn't change when you hire.
Owning has costs that renting doesn't. The box is a physical thing in your building: keep it on a UPS, keep a backup, and plan for the day the hardware needs replacing. If you'd rather never think about any of that, Cloud is the honest recommendation.

Straight answers
▸What happens if I stop paying for the continuity plan?
The box keeps working. You keep running the software already on it, with your data on it. You stop receiving updates, offsite backup, remote app access, and support until you turn the plan back on.
▸Is it the same software as Traveler Cloud?
Yes. Both Shop Server editions run the same software as Cloud, with unlimited users, and nothing is held back for owning the box.
▸What about power outages?
Shop Server Defense includes a small UPS for clean shutdowns. On the standard Shop Server, plugging the box into a UPS you already have is a good idea.
▸Is the Shop Server available now?
Not yet. Traveler is in early access with Cloud first, and the Shop Server is planned to ship after it. Reserving one at /shop-server is free, with no deposit.
